Egoid, you don't. You need to find the right spot so that they literally lock in place. There's only one solution to the puzzle (I think the puzzle differs per game), so you need to use a little trial and error to get the first couple of pieces in place before solving the rest. They lock in place easily, and turn to a red tint when they do.

It doesn't really make sense that the alien can't leave the ship because there is no atmosphere, yet he did manage to plant the flag, and can survive in a ship with a broken glass dome.

Nice game, but get a 3 for the lack of info 'bout puzzle solution! (and if you try the 4th, is even worse)
