It's not clear to me how the stars are determined, or what power I have over their assignment - most of the points seem to be earned after I have reached my 'goal', when the game seems to autoplay.

I am not personally a fan of timed match 3 games; however, I really enjoyed this one -- very clever in the way the game helps you deal with running out of time.
