no mute, no mouse controls for movement, that is why 1 star, other wise might have been good

Is this still in development or something? Game does not advance past wave 26. Fun so far.
Thanks for comment! I was totally unaware of this bug. I've already fixed it and I'm uploading an updated version. :)

This game is ridiculously underrated. Sorry, dev
Well, space-shooters aren't popular these days :)

@WorldsEndEnt XP is the numbered blocks that you pick up. There are set milestones that you get to as indicated in the XP bar. Once you hit the milestones, there are automatic upgrades on both primary and secondary weapons. I think what's so good about this game, is that sometimes the "better" weapon is different based on what level you're at. Always experiment with weapon choice after advancing.
In theory, consecutive weapons are better in every aspect, but I've also noticed that strange thing. High-level primary bullets are very fast and with bonus which make them even faster it's just more difficult to hit something. However, secondary weapons should not have that problem, which makes them very valueable in the end-game.

Fun game. How does xp work?
Thanks. It's like vinton1640 said, collecting pickups from destroyed enemies allows to get new level which means better weapons. Sometimes there can be enemy projectiles near pickups, so it's more challenging than just getting xp for destroying.
