Shortening AND margarine? and you didn't even mix the dry ingredients? You'll end up with lumpy, bitter, sour tasting cake!
Here, a gift:
basic white cake/cupcake mix
Dry mix: 2 cups flour, one tablespoon baking powder, pinch of salt, stir to combine and put aside.
Wet mix: 1/2 cup soft butter and 1/2 to 1 cup of sugar. Blend together until fully mixed and smooth. Add two eggs, add one egg at a time and stir. add teaspoon of vanilla or other flavouring desire.
Now, with 1 cup of milk, add dry mix into wet mix a quarter at a time while adding a quarter of a milk after each dry addition.
Pour into cupcake tins or pre-buttered cake pan and bake in a pre-heated oven at 350F for 45 minutes to an hour, 10 to 15 minutes for the cupcakes.
You're welcome.

This could have been fantastic if I could have actually decorated the cakes, or made different kinds and then decorated them for different couples. As it is, it was too simplistic.
