Okay, you can just press the same weapon number to reset your heat - don't need to switch between weapons to do it. This game would be too hard without doing this. The "cover" ship with the highest armor seems to be the best bang for the buck. And once you get a new ship you can heal between missions by selecting your old ship then the one you want to use. The swift learner perk works but it doesn't show when enemies are killed - it shows in your total. Not sure about the other perks.
Best bet is to get swift learn, cover ship, and then save for the BFG. Once you get that you are golden. It runs out of heat fast (have to press 6 a bit faster) but it kills things extremely easily - even bosses.

Now, about the game.
What's there to like here?
There are issues all over on this game. From the fact that switching weapons resets the overheat meter (switch fast, you never run out) to the fact that between missions they'll teach you new stuff, sell you new guns & ships but won't repair your old ship, this game is just unbalanced tripe.
Oh, not to mention someone needs to be watching their object creation/deletion as the game gets slower and slower the longer it goes. My guess is not properly removing onEnterFrame commands means old ships/shots are still having their AI run.
