Of course if the woman's health drops to like 1 or 2 hearts, then you want to stop focusing on bananas so much and try to protect her. For protecting the woman, I think the most effective strategy is to try to anticipate in advance which rocks are going to hit her. Don't try to hit every single rock that looks like it's coming her way or else you'll be juggling a lot of rocks and probably hit her by accident with rocks that wouldn't have hit her otherwise.

For those saying it's too hard, I've currently managed to set the highest score of all time (15,170 with 7,250 being second place) though someone will probably top it soon. My strategy is simple: focus more on collecting bananas than protecting the wife. Try to get good enough at this where you can get at least 10 bananas on the first level so that you can upgrade health. Once you get on a roll collecting bananas and upgrades (and without getting your wife killed), then the game will really start getting difficult with lots of rocks coming down. At this point, switch gears to protect the wife and forget about the bananas: you'll collect some by accident doing this anyway, especially with power upgrades.

This is a really fun little mini-game - one of my favorites. It's deceptively simple at first but becomes really challenging later on. I've managed to get the hang of collecting bananas pretty efficiently: even managed to get 15 on the first round. Protecting the wife is harder though: her fast movement combined with the slow-falling rocks makes it very difficult to tell whether a rock is going to hit her or not.
