Description

Not bad for a first go really, seen oh so much worse by people that should know better. Since it's a student thing I'll tone down my usual err... pickiness a bit ;) Pretty much comes down to an exercise in maths in the end, pop a potion if you're at 10 or less, otherwise don't - but the visuals are cute in a retroish sort of way. Have to ask, everyone else had an animation, why not our hero? Seemed odd to have everything else waving about but not him/her/it? Any road, I'd suggest perhaps that to take this sort of thing further, have a combat screen with several different abilities maybe - varying damages on timers or somesuch. Monsters might well have some too, would vary up the combat a good deal and provide more variability/replay interest. Just how I'd mix it up, were it something I was pursuing working on. Also, the collision... yeah yecccccccch. That really needs to be worked out so you aren't getting stuck on each little bit of scenery - that needs to be priority one :)

Thanks Irasfel. The guys have already started on their next game, so watch this space ;) The collision worked 'normally' until about 5 minutes before uploading - it had to be changed as about 4 walls had a teleport glitch that made it unplayable. They've learnt a lot and will take it forwards, thanks for the input!

After dying, I collided with, well, everything. Movement became difficult to the point where I just had to quit. For your future project I suggest looking into a freeware library for AS3 which might be able to handle some of the collision detection things for you. Game looked nice in a Commodore 64 kinda way, although the 2nd level was an eyesore. All in all, consider this project a success in how it's probably taught you. Start/keep working on your new project!

Agree with the other comments, the collision was frustrating, but I totally empathise and it would have been nice to have more animation.
The music and art are both very promising, but they don't really work together for me, the eerie music and the mostly bright open areas felt a bit mis-matched, perhaps a fog of war around the player and lowering the contrast on the monsters and particularly the environment would have added atmosphere.
Promising stuff though! Good luck to you all :)
