if you make your paddle go to the far left or right, the ball can go between the wall and the paddle

Not bad for your first! Collision detection needs work. Playing field is also too small (or paddles are too large). Also needs a goal; something to work towards. A simple counter isn't very rewarding. Keep it up though!
