Description
New and improved! How well do you hold up while distracted? Test yourself in our memory island game! Now with up to 66% less monotony!
This game is part of a research project by faculty at Wabash College. For more information about our project, visit our web page at http://www.behaviorgames.com/Kong.php

Older news:
This game is a revised version of our original Distraction Island. The original game didn't attract much attention, but we did get a few helpful comments (that it was too easy, and repetitive).
So, in this version, we've made the game harder, and shorter. And, instead of posting several different high scores (for your points, memory score, and the average trial speed), we've created an overall rating that gives you an idea of how well you did in the game (maximum rating = 10,000, which is excellent). Any rating over 8.5k is pretty good.
How to Play
Use arrow keys (or WASD keys) to move. Use Esc to end the game early.
On each trial, find the the stone cube that is hidden in one of the pedestals placed around the edge of the island.
On some trials, you will be given a short string of letters to remember (such as "ZVQ"). Try to remember these letters for the entire trial. Don't write them down, but you can repeat them to yourself while you are looking for the cube. If you remember these letters, you'll get a bonus at the end of the trial!
There are 75 trials total, but you will finish early if you do well in the game (at finding the target on your first try on each trial).
Developer Updates
7/5: Contest is closed!
6/25: Added controls so that you can increase your speed, if you want. | 6/22/2011: We are starting a contest today. The first 200 people to complete Distraction Island 2 will be entered to win 50 kreds.
How do I win?
-The players with the top 10 scores (Rating) will each win 50 kreds.
-The other players will be entered into a raffle to win one of ten raffle prizes (50 kreds each).
Details:
-To be eligible, you have to complete the entire game (all 75 trials, or less if you complete the game early and get the early completion bonus). (it should take most people between 20-45 minutes to finish the game.)
-If you complete the game, you should get a score of “1” in the “Who has completed the game?” statistic (under High Scores)
-Winners will be announced in Game News once the contest is complete.
-The contest is complete once 200 players complete the game.
-If there is a tie for the 10th highest score, the player who finished first (based on our server data) will be the winner.
-Limit one entry per person. You can do the game as many times as you want, to try to improve your score, but you will only be eligible to win one prize.
-We reserve the right to disqualify players who appear to have submitted hacked scores or submit multiple scores from separate accounts.
-Other limitations may be announced as the contest proceeds.

It doesn't even make any sense :s All pedestals are empty, if you get close enough to them (I thought it was textures on top of them we were supposed to look for, but seems not) it auto-uses them. So I'm essentially just running around poking randomly on the pedestals getting lousy scores :D

FYI: the number of points you earn on each trial (your base number of points) depends on the number of pedestals/cylinders you check. If you go to the correct cylinder on your first trial, then you get the full number of points. The more cylinders you check, the fewer points you get. So, the goal is to learn to find your target on your first trial (And, bonus, this will help you finish the game faster!) Helpful? Click + and send it up.

@steffe2: Ah, I think I see the problem. You aren't looking for the texture on the pedestals. There is a cube hidden inside of one of the pedestals. If you go up to the right one, you'll see the word "Correct" and the cube will appear in front of you (hovering over the pedestal). If you go up to one of the wrong ones, then the word "Incorrect" will appear, and the pedestal will drop to the ground (so that it is easier to keep track of which one you checked). The top of each pedestal should look the same (and unlike any of the target textures). Sorry for the confusion!
@tcOverlord: thanks: I'd love to add sounds (in the past we've avoided it, as many of our experiments are done in computer labs in groups, and we don't want people to be distracted by what their neighbor was doing). But for this, I could see sounds being a good addition.

Well, you say that, behaviorgames, but I still have the second highest score of all time, as of right now, and have yet to figure out a consistant way of knowing where the cubes are. To me, it seems completely random and unindicated. If you've hidden a clue, perhaps you've hidden it too well. :P
