Just think of the weapon slots as 4 towers in gemcraft, If you are point north and need to point west, instead of spinning 3 times and not being able to fire that whole time, go to config screen once, which pauses gameplay, swap your deck gun in direction of mother ship, and you're good to go, no refresh time penalty as in gemcraft, I did the whole game without spinning once with good results
