I find the heavy crossbow to be the most effective throughout the game. Combined with an AP arrow and bow upgrades, you got yourself a powerful bow. Add on the archers/catapult backup, most of the time you won't go down to more than 85%. I tend to focus on the larger guys first if there are, e.g. explosive carts, rams before taking out the smaller guys.

Brilliant gameplay! Got me hooked from the start till I challenged the king.
