did scouts get nerfed? they only auto scout once and then they wont go anymore. also, they only go so far and then come back. not helpful since i can only zoom out so far to send them.
yes they can't go too far but they can now be upgraded to explorers !

how do i get the smithy to work? i shouldnt have to "craft" in the crafting menu for this.
Smithy is currently a building that workshops/manufactures use to craft metal based things so you still order those buildings to craft. If you demolish smithy the recipes would be removed and you wouldn't be able to craft those things in workshops/manufactures.
