What does a Hero's Skill Total mean? (When hiring heros)

how do i play on hardcore mode once ive unlocked it?

Can someone tell me how to shake off the purple guys that stick and prevent me from moving at all?

when you equip items to a hero, does it always work when you've chosen that hero for your party for a quest? Or do you have to have the hero's icon that allows you to build their individual units selected?
