For Chaos Unleashed, gold is used to summon the Chaos titan. For Nethergate, you can just capture the points to summon Nether titans. For Ballistae Alley is to summon the ballistae arrows, and for Towers and Titans, the gold is to summon protecting gylphs (that's what I call it) around you.
