Keyboard controls too sloppy

Newbie here - so I crafted a bow and am trying to equip it, but I don't seem to be able to assign it to any of my bowmen - what's up?

How do I increase my odds of creating refined items (besides using refined items)? For example, how do I increase my odds of creating refined first-level items that I can in turn use for second-level items, and so on? Thanks in advance for any guidance - and have a great Thanksgiving.

Newbie here - having difficulty using spells. Click on the hotkey and see the icon, but then what do I do?

I can't tell if this is a glitch or not, but I've purchased several Improvements, but the game won't allow my Blacksmith and Sorcerer to Improve them. I also purchased a Carpenter's shop but the game won't let me use it. What am I missing here? I thought you purchased an Improvement, your employees improved them with their points, and when you contribute enough points you get the Improvements.
